Title:
Comparison between PI and MPC techniques for Synchronous Motor Current control: A study case
Abstract:
Controlling electric motors is crucial for many industrial applications, as they are widely used to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. However, electric motors present some challenges, such as nonlinearity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) dynamics and coupling effects. Therefore, choosing an appropriate control technique is essential to achieve high performance and efficiency. This paper presents a comparison between two control techniques for synchronous motor current control: proportional-integral (PI) with axes decoupling and model predictive control (MPC). The control design is based on a study case of a synchronous motor with anisotropic rotor structure, for an actual industrial application, characterized by a representative set-point profile. The paper first introduces the mathematical model of the employed synchronous motor in the d-q rotating reference frame. Then, it describes the design process and implementation of the PI and MPC controllers. Finally, a comparison of their performance is made. Speed tracking, robustness, computational complexity, disturbance rejection and parameter variations will be analysed.
Our presentation will be September 3 – 3.20pm – ROOM 10 Industrial Session 2
